January 15th (Wilderness) and January 29th (Urban), 2022 (First Session) & July 2nd (Wilderness) and July 16th (Urban), 2022 (Second Session) – Cost Per Student: $250 / $150 Audit. Student

The Huffman K9 Intro into Man Tracking seminar will be an introductory training course focusing on teaching the “blueprint” for man tracking in both Wilderness and Urban environments. The course will take place over two full Sundays, spaced two weeks apart.  This allows us to teach and demonstrate techniques that can be practiced by students over the following 13 days.

Day one will consist of a two hour classroom session followed by 6-8 hours of wilderness tracking practice. Day two will Immediately jump into urban tracking, meeting in downtown Portland.

Handlers will learn to develop tracking K9 capabilities in different ages of K9’s, develop tracking effectiveness and maintain capability, unique considerations for tracking in both an urban and rural/wilderness landscape, translate the fundamentals of science behind scent signatures into tracking performance, learn how tracking teams can be beaten, learn basic leash handling skills to increase tracking performance and how to read changes of behavior in your K9 and adjust search strategy.  Each day will be dedicated to working directly with each handler and each dog present in the course.  Each member of the course will have an opportunity to observe each of the other handlers and dogs – and presented with an opportunity to learn from each other’s successes and issues.

April 3rd-9th, 2022 – Cost Per Human Attending: $1200/ Departmental Cost: $6500 (Max 8 Students / K9 Teams)

Huffman K9’s 7-day man tracking course is a comprehensive training course focusing on developing the fundamental skills of the K9 team in man tracking.

Handlers will learn to develop tracking K9 capabilities in different ages of K9’s, learn how to develop tracking effectiveness and maintain capability, attach to a unit as a tracking component in a urban and rural landscapes, translate the fundamentals of science behind scent signatures and apply this information to increase tracking performance, demonstrate the most efficient way to draw weapon systems, employ and engage threats while moving on a track, utilize multiple K9 teams on a single track, utilize cover and concealment while moving quickly through a city, develop creativity in both operations and in teaching others, and avoid counter-tracking tactics used against the handler.

Because this is a “train the trainers” class, we discuss various methods used globally to begin tracking with pups and how they differ based on different desired agency policy. We will discuss quality control in purchasing tracking K9’s and incorporating contamination of surfaces into each of the models. Approximately 1/3 of each session will consist of classroom work and the remaining will be taught in the field.

This Huffman K9 Detection seminar will be an introductory training course focusing on teaching the “blueprint” for selecting and developing a detection K9.  The course will take place over two full Sundays, spaced two weeks apart.  This allows us to teach and demonstrate techniques that can be practiced by students over the following 13 days.  Day two will teach and demonstrate the next steps in developing and continuing the development of each dog.

This Huffman K9 Advanced Detection seminar will be an extension training course which goes beyond basic imprinting and begins to focus on working an already imprinted detection dog.

The course will take place over two full days. This course is geared towards the professional K9 handler but is open to all detection dog enthusiasts. Students will learn from current and certified detection handlers, working in the real world and with real experiences.

March 12th-13th, 2022 – Cost Per Student: $350 / $150 Audit. Student

This Huffman K9 decoy seminar will be a comprehensive training course focusing on developing professional decoys for work within the Protection Dog, Law Enforcement and Military working dog industries. The course will cover puppy selection, foundation and entry level bitework, bite development, bite targeting, drive capping and drive development, movement and the emotional state of the k9 prior to and during bite. Learn how to increase the K9’s resilience to emotional, physical and environmental stressors.

Instructors are professional decoys, currently working within the working dog community. Students will work with these instructors, learning how to assess each K9, identify weaknesses and develop strategies and prescribed training that will further the dog in its protection career. Students will learn to fix issues (i.e. environmental stress, handler stress and decoy confrontation issues). Students will learn to develop better targeting, a deeper “punching in” bite, increase confidence while handling greater levels of environmental, emotional, physical and mental stressors.

September 24th & September 25th, 2022 – Cost Per Student: $350 / $100 Audit. Student

The Huffman K9 bite work seminar will be a comprehensive training course focusing on bite development, bite targeting, and the emotional state your k9 is in prior to and during bite. 

Instructors will implement situation-based training events to first assess your dog, allowing prescribed training that will further your dog in its protection career and fix issues (i.e. environmental stress, handler stress and decoy confrontation issues).  Dogs will develop better targeting, a deeper “punching in” bite, increase confidence while handling greater levels of environmental, emotional, physical and mental stressors.

Handlers will learn to recognize the dog’s emotional state and how to increase the dogs resilience to stressors, increase their confidence and continue to develop their dogs protection or apprehension performance.  Handlers will learn to utilize tools like dog kits (Harness, Collars, Leashes, etc) to facilitate further training and continue the K9’s path to success.

August 13th-14th, 2022 / Cost Per Student: $250 / $150 Audit. Student

Huffman K9’s 2-day Implementation of stress and stress ecology seminar is a comprehensive training course focused on the safe, effective and productive use of controlled stress during canine training exercises.

The course will begin with a discussion about stress ecology. Stress ecology is the science of how stress influences adaptation in organisms. Students will learn how stress can be used to build better health, better stress resilience, better confidence, gain trust in others, accelerate encoding of information, improve the robustness of memories and increase performance under heavy stress loads.
